RECORD numbers of transgender teenagers are getting the green light for irreversible sex-change surgery.
Last month, four got Family Court permission to have gender-swapping treatment.
Eight have been granted the life-changing treatment this year, double last year's number.
All were aged 15 to 17, but the court has approved applications by teens as young as 13.
A total of 25 cases have been dealt with since the first court application in 2004.
They or their guardians must apply to the court for permission to have medical treatment for the condition.
Applications for treatment can also be made to state Supreme Courts.
One 17-year-old last year won the right to have gender-changing surgery against the wishes of his parents after the court ruled he should be free to make his own decisions about medical treatment.
Until recently Family Court authorisation was required for both reversible Stage 1 and partly irreversible Stage 2 treatments.
But a 2013 Family Court appeal decision ruled Stage 1 — the suppression of puberty — no longer required court intervention.
Stage 2 treatments include administering hormones, and have irreversible features.
Transgender Victoria’s executive director Sally Goldner said there was evidence of a rise in gender dysphoria.
“Attitudes have shifted in the last three years or so. People are more comfortable in … disclosing their status, and there is more acceptance.”
The waiting list at The Royal Children's Hospital's gender dysphoria clinic is now more than 14 months.
There were 104 referrals last year and the figure is expected to exceed 150 this year.
