Researchers at Stanford University have developed a new wireless device which combines optogenetics and wireless technology. The researchers claimed that the new device can help in establishing a new foundation of implants in the future.
Optogenetic methods use light to control and monitor neurons that have been genetically preconditioned to respond to light. Earlier, optogenetic required a fiber optic cable to be attached to a subject's head, potentially restricting its movement and altering behavior.
The biggest challenge faced by the device at that time was identifying a means of getting powered efficiently without causing any damage to any electrical component or using any external wire.
According to a report, with the help of light, researchers can now stimulate brain nerves of a mouse that indicate there will be no long wire hookups letting the mice to move during the experiments.
As per the Stanford University team, developing this kind of device will be a big advantage, when it will be used for the future researches, and makes the work quite flexible.
According to Ada Poon, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at the university, this is a new method of delivering wireless power to be used in optogenetics for the reason that it is much smaller and it helps the mouse move around.
As per reports, Optogenetics is used with genetically modified mice so that their brains could be controlled using light. Genetically modified mice are put in a chamber, which emits radio frequency agency that is moved to a minute coil in the implanted device from paw of the animal and after that it lights up.
