It's called multispectral imaging, and it's already brought back to life a map possibly used by Christopher Columbus, never-seen poetry by William Faulkner and an opera that perhaps no living person has heard. 

"Most people don't realize the potential here to radically change the canon of literature, history, music — you name it," Greg Hayworth, an English professor pursuing the technique with a small set of students and colleagues, told NBC News. 

Hayworth and collaborator Roger Easton are at the forefront of what amounts to a new field of study, aiming not just to preserve old texts that may not survive another decade in a damp archive or war-torn country, but to withdraw secrets from them that no one suspected were ever there. 

Easton, for instance, has been working on journals written by the famed Victorian explorer of Africa, David Livingstone — who seems to have run short of diary pages. 

"He wrote on newspapers, with berry juice — and the juice immediately faded. It's unreadable," Easton said in a phone interview with NBC News. With multispectral imaging, however, Easton and others were able to make the text as clear as day. 

"It's amazing how much skepticism we had at first," Easton recalled of the scholars in the field. "They were saying, 'You won't get anything out of this,' and we said, 'Oh, yes we will.'

'An esoteric science'


Multispectral imaging works by photographing the object illuminated by numerous, very specific wavelengths of light, one at a time. Various materials, pigments and inks respond differently to, say, ultraviolet light versus deep green, By examining each of these specially lighted images carefully and combining them ("the image processing is where the magic happens," Easton said), features that were invisible to the naked eye become distinct and readable. 

"It really is an esoteric science," said Hayworth. "But it's transformative." In particular, palimpsests — documents that, to save parchment, were erased and written over long ago — respond well to multispectral imaging, but they're just the start. 

A 15th-century map that may have been consulted by Columbus came to life under multispectral imaging, revealing names, annotations and descriptions far beyond what anyone expected, and potentially altering the story of the Spaniard's famous voyage to the New World.

Musical scores damaged by fire, time, water, or all three, can also be brought back to life. There are Biblical gospels sitting around that no one living has ever read. And a few lost poems by Faulkner that would have crumbled to nothing in a few years were saved as well ("They're terrible," said Hayworth, but nevertheless they are highly important to Faulkner scholars). 

These recovered scraps, it turns out, aren't just footnotes or ephemera. Entirely new primary texts and pages of works thousands of years old are being discovered. Documents from classical authors like Archimedes and Galen, and newer works, like the the Declaration of Independence and Shakespeare-era books, are being scoured for interesting details. (Jefferson erased "subjects" and wrote "citizens" in one section of the Declaration, for instance.) 

With somewhere over 50,000 (and perhaps several times that) parchments, scrolls, maps and other documents lurking in back rooms of monasteries, forgotten collections at libraries, or even hidden inside other books, there's a lot of potential for big finds.

The problem is that so few people are skilled in this kind of detective work. The equipment is fairly expensive — to build one from scratch might cost $100,000, Easton estimated — and can be bulky, though a new portable version fits in a suitcase and the cost is coming down. Even if it were cheap and compact, would-be discoverers require a lot of expertise to wrangle the dozens of images and settings involved. 

With a dedicated group and a bit of grant money, however, it would just be a matter of time before these treasures were uncovered. If only there were time.

History in ruins

"Many of these objects aren't going to last," Hayworth said. "They're out there where there isn't money or the ability to reach them — and they're in danger, as you've seen with ISIS."

The Islamic extremist group has been razing monuments and statues all over the Middle East, and armed conflicts often go hand in hand with looting, bombing and vandalism of historical sites and museums. 

And if war doesn't ruin these treasures, they can fall to nature or old age: Documents are routinely lost to flooding, storms, fires and other natural disasters. Even relatively recent paper records, including documents from the civil rights movement in the 1960s, are fading away to nothing. Without someone like Easton or Hayworth to recover them, they will end up simply being thrown away.

The gravity of the situation is producing a healthy multidisciplinary effort that's all too uncommon these days, Easton said: "You've got scientists and humanities people trying to talk. And we don't always speak the same language." 

The goal is to spread the knowledge and equipment as widely as possible — Easton, Hayworth and their colleagues are in talks with libraries, universities and archives around the world in hopes that other concerned scholars and engineers will lend a hand. Much research is still needed about how to improve the process, detect falsified data and determine why and when multispectral imaging even works. 

In the meantime, the results speak, or perhaps sing, for themselves: Hayworth has retrieved an opera by Georg Philipp Telemann, a contemporary of Mozart's, and hopes to find a collaborator who can help play it — possibly for the first time in centuries. And the researchers themselves are having the time of their lives. 

"It's stuff that we couldn't even imagine doing 20 years ago," Easton said. "Whenever we get something, I'm just blown away that, one, that we got it — and two, that I'm the one that gets to do it."

A Scientist Deploys Light And Sound To Reveal The Brain

A nanosecond pulsed laser beam starts the photoacoustic imaging process.

Lihong Wang creates the sort of medical technology you'd expect to find on the starship Enterprise.

Wang, a professor of biomedical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, has already helped develop instruments that can detect individual cancer cells in the bloodstream and oxygen consumption deep within the body. He's also created a camera that shoots at 100 billion frames a second, fast enough to freeze an object traveling at the speed of light.

"It's really about turning some of these ideas that we thought were science fiction into fact," says Richard Conroy, who directs the Division of Applied Science & Technology at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering.

Wang's ultimate goal is to use a combination of light and sound to solve the mysteries of the human brain. The brain is a "magical black box we still don't understand," he says.

Wang describes himself as a tool maker. And when President Obama unveiled his BRAIN initiative a couple of years ago to accelerate efforts to understand how we think and learn and remember, Wang realized that brain researchers really needed a tool he'd been working on for years.

"We want to conquer the brain," Wang says. "But even for a mouse brain, which is only a few millimeters thick, we really don't have a technique that allows us to see throughout the whole brain."

Current brain-imaging techniques such as functional MRI or PET scans all have drawbacks. They're slow, or not sharp enough, or they can only see things near the surface.

So Wang has been developing another approach, one he believes will be fast enough to monitor brain activity in real time and sharp enough to reveal an individual brain cell.

Wang's initial idea was to use light. There was a problem, though — one that's obvious if you hold your hand up to a light bulb. When light enters the body, it starts bouncing around.

"This is why we can't even see our own bone in the hands," Wang says. "Because light, after like a millimeter, it becomes hopeless to get a very good sharp image."

Wang thought he had a solution. It involved sound. Sound waves don't bounce around much in the body, which is why an ultrasound can show a growing fetus.

But ultrasound images are blurry, sometimes so blurry it's hard to tell a boy from a girl. So Wang began experimenting with a technique that blends the speed and precision of light with the penetrating ability of sound. It's called photoacoustic imaging.

"We're combining the strengths of two forms of energy, light and sound, in a single form of imaging," Wang says.

In the past few years, photoacoustic imaging has become a very big deal in the scientific world. And so has Wang.

Last year, he published more than 50 scientific papers. So far his research has attracted nearly $50 million in grant funding. And Caltech was impressed enough to lure him away from Washington University. His lab will be move from St. Louis to Pasadena over the next year.

In the meantime, Wang seems to be everywhere, delivering speeches, leading meetings and sitting on scientific advisory boards. "It's really nonstop, right? You have to sleep, but then other than that you try to work all the time," he says.

Wang has so many projects going that his lab now has teams working on four different floors of one research building at Washington University.

One of those projects is Wang's latest photoacoustic microscope, which occupies much of a metal workbench the size of a ping pong table. Jinyang Liang, a postdoc, shows me how the device turns light into sound and sound into images of a living brain.

"So that big guy, metal box there, is a laser," Liang tells me. During an experiment, the laser generates pulses of light that travel through a maze of mirrors and filters before reaching an anesthetized mouse on the other side of the table.

Once the pulses of light enter the mouse's skull and brain they start to bounce around. But enough light energy gets through to cause molecules of brain tissue to vibrate. And those vibrations produce distinctive sound waves.
So light goes into the brain and sounds come out. And just a few months ago, those sounds allowed a lab team to create high-speed, highly detailed, three-dimensional images of mouse brain at work. "When I first saw that I was amazed," Liang says.

So was Richard Conroy at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. He says he's often amazed by Wang, who has been funded by the institute for more than a decade.

"He's one of these unique people who's able to take technologies and ideas from one field and apply them to a different field," Conroy says. "So for example his work trying to target light at individual cells within the body. That's really borrowing ideas from astronomy."

Photoacoustic imaging can do more than reveal the brain, Conroy says. Wang's lab has helped develop systems that use the technique to show tumors of the breast and skin, and even detect individual cancer cells in the bloodstream.

And Conroy says that's just the beginning. "It's research that really pushes the limits of our understanding of how to image in space and time," he says.
And that could eventually lead to devices as futuristic as the medical tricorder on the starship Enterprise, Conroy says. "It would be great to have a device like they had in Star Trek. You could just lie there, the beam of light would pass over you, it would be able to tell everything that was wrong with you."
Photoacoustic imaging can't do that yet. It still hasn't been used on a human brain. But Wang says he follows a simple rule in his lab: "Never say impossible."

And for Wang, that approach seems to work. A couple of years ago, he got some very special funding from the National Institutes of Health. "This is a grant that gives you unbridled funds for you to do anything you see fit essentially," he says. "So we were really emboldened to explore very new directions."

One of those directions involved a camera. The goal was to build the fastest camera ever, a camera so fast it could take pictures of light itself.

Wang picked a small team that included Jinyang Liang, an expert in optics. "We thought man, I mean it sounds crazy but can we see the propagation of light, because that's literally the fastest object in the universe," Liang says.

Wang suggested an approach to achieve this seemingly impossible feat. And about six months later, the team was showing their boss the first movie ever of a pulse of light reflecting off a mirror.

"At the moment I feel like he is speechless because, you know, no one has ever seen this before," Liang says.

Wang recalls being awed, but not exactly surprised. "Science really has no limit, you know," he says. "The minute that you reach one limit you are trying to break it, trying to reach the next limit."

And for Wang, that next limit lies somewhere inside the black box that is the human brain.

Our globalised era is dominated by the rationalism of science and technology, economics and commerce paradigm, often at the expense of humanities and arts. Yet can there be science-technology without the human? Technology in its broadest sense is about tools and their usage. But who uses them? 

Today’s lifestyles demand a fresh redefinition of the perimeters of science-technology vs arts-humanities; intersecting as they do, in so many ways.

Designs that aim at making the user interface of technology more pleasant; visual aesthetics of our everyday necessities of laptop, tablet and phone; language interfaces; etc., all areas of function, but caressing the world of arts. Some of the world’s greatest innovations, as Steve Jobs succinctly said “intersect at the crossroads of technology and art”. 

Outside the worlds of academia, arts are often regarded as ephemeral and of no practical use. The reluctance of generations to engage with art in its broadest sense is to me a colossal waste of human potential.

An engagement with arts takes the soliloquy out and forces you to have a dialogue across disciplines and perspectives. Humanities recognise the dynamics of differences in human thought and life, revelling in the unsettling crevices of difficult dialogue, even while they negotiate the paradoxes of learning and living.

In today’s education system, arts have been booted out. Over the last few decades, we have reinforced public perception that arts are lovely but not essential, and have been trivialised as mere entertainment. Most of our academic institutions do a wonderful job in preparing the students for successful careers. But they fail in preparing them for life as good human beings. 

We are training our youth in skills, not in thinking; millions of engineers, no innovators, a cry voiced by none other than Mr Narayanamurthy himself. We regurgitate outside innovations and are proud to be babus of a new imperialism. 

In our single-pointed trajectory of profit, return on investment and bank balances, we have obviated art. What price tag can we put on the Taj Mahal, the Ellora temple, Carnatic music, Bharatanatyam, Patachitra, to name a few? If this collective unconscious memory is systematically erased, what does that leave us with?

When any country showcases its strength on the global stage, it is always with a dazzling display of its culture. Our Republic Day parade is a stellar example, and yet the infusion of arts in education is barely there. If economy and business make the spine of a country, then culture is its face and soul. If this very culture is not nurtured, would that not make us faceless? 

Access then becomes the key word. We need to figure out multiple ways of continued access of as many varieties of culture, to as many people. Because if the young are not ever exposed to arts, what will they spend their bank balances on later? 

But more than that an engagement with arts, creates value, not in terms of money, or even a career, but in terms of a deep landscape of personal resource, a core strength to be drawn on at key points of one’s life.

To me the nation is like a 32-wheeled truck, trudging along the highways. Culture and arts comprise one wheel. Ignore this wheel at your own peril.

The Canada Science and Technology Museum has partnered with the Google Cultural Institute to create a new virtual exhibit about cycling.

Photos, illustrations and stories about early big-wheel bicycles, tricycles and wooden bikes from the museum's archives are among 25 historical types of pedal-powered technology that will be featured in the exhibit, entitled Cycling: The Evolution of an Experience, 1818-1900. 

The partnership gives the museum the distinction of being the first national museum to launch a virtual exhibition in partnership with Google's virtual museum platform, the museum announced on July 8.
“The Canada Science and Technology Museum has one of the world's best collections of historic bikes and printed material relating to the history of cycling,” Alex Benay, chief executive officer of the Canada Science and Technology Museum Corporation, said in the statement. 

The new partnership will allow the museum to share its collection with people around the world, he said.
The collaboration was not prompted by the closure of the museum last fall. 

Rather, the partnership has provided two opportunities, including using a platform to showcase portions of the museum’s collection online “in a way that would make it accessible to all Canadians, who might never be able to come to Ottawa whether the floor was open or not,” David McGee, the museum archivist who put together the new exhibit, said in an email. 

“The other (advantage) was to contribute to the world cultural community, using a part of our collection that is not just about the Canadian experience, but about a shared scientific and technological heritage that has spread around the world,” McGee said. 

The Google Cultural Institute provides the online platform to museums and archives around the world to increase access to important cultural material as well as preserve information digitally to educate and inspire future generations. 

Several new exhibitions that will explore other aspects of the museum's archived collection are in development.
